Overhead cranes have been a staple for a variety of industries. There are four primary configurations of cranes. When choosing a crane type you need to know a couple of things like its capacity, its class as well as its lifting height. Here is a rundown of the four common overhead configurations.

Why Diesel Vehicles Are Well Suited For Construction Work

Diesel is the fuel of choice when it comes to the type of engine used in construction and manufacturing vehicles, and there are many reasons why this has been the case.

  • Diesel vehicles in general are cheaper to run then petrol, especially over longer periods of time. This is thanks to the cheaper base cost of diesel fuel, as well as the more efficient fuel consumption of diesel engines. However, this price difference has significantly decreased over recent years.
  • Diesel vehicles are able to produce huge amounts of torque (pulling power), this makes them well suited for hauling and towing jobs.
  • Diesel-powered vehicles never require ignition tune-ups because they do not have spark plugs or distributors.
  • There is a great deal of government pressure to produce low-emission diesel powertrains for passenger vehicles, trucks, buses, and farm and construction equipment. This means there is a lot of competition between diesel vehicle manufacturers to produce better quality engines for their vehicles, increasing the quality of diesel vehicles to come.

     

Laser Cutting, How Does it Work?

Laser cutting is a process used by industries and professionals the world over. It is a highly specialised process that can take a deal of expertise and equipment in order to carry out. This post looks at the technology behind the process and just how it works.

Laser cutting is generally used to cut metal plates. Metals such as, mild steel, stainless steel, and aluminium are often used. The laser cutting process is highly accurate, yields excellent cut quality, has a very small kerf width and small heat affect zone, and makes it possible to cut very intricate shapes and small holes.

The laser itself is a column of high intensity light, of a single wavelength or colour. The beam is only about 3/4 of an inch in diameter as it travels from the laser resonator, which creates the beam, through the machine’s beam path.

Choosing a Lead Acid Battery

Its recommended that when choosing a new battery, a battery that has the greatest reserve capacity or amp hour rating is chosen. Of course the physical size, cable hook up and terminal type must also be taken into consideration.

Other recommended battery types include Gel-Cell or Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM) rather than a Wet Cell; if the battery is not or can not receive regular maintenance.

Be sure to purchase the correct type of battery for the job. An engine starting battery will need a very different charge to a deep cycle battery.

Freshness of a new battery is very important. The longer a battery has been sitting and not charged, the more damaging sulfation has likely built up on the plates.

Most batteries have a date of manufacturers code on them. The month is indicated by a letter ‘A’ being January and a number ‘4’ being 2004. C4 would tell us the battery was manufactured in March 2004.

Lead Acid Battery Maintenance

Battery maintenance is an important part of maintaining a well functioning piece of equipment. The lead acid battery is the powerhouse, any issues that come up in regards to the battery will effect functions throughout the entire machine.

In order to maintain a lead acid battery effectively the battery should be clean. Cable connections need to be clean and tightened.  It is very common that many battery problems are caused by dirty and loose connections.

Serviceable batteries need to have the fluid level checked regularly and only at a full charge as the fluid level will always be higher at a full charge.

Use distilled water to refill the battery, tap water is loaded with chemicals and minerals that are harmful to a battery and should be avoided. Make sure not to overfill battery cells especially in warmer weather, the natural fluid expansion in hot weather will push excess electrolytes from the battery.
