Since laser cutting is a specialised process, only certain materials can be used. One of these is acrylic, which is a popular choice used by manufacturers of plastic goods.
This is due in part to the fact that acrylic is one of the cheapest plastics to cut. It’s also considered an attractive material, it has a glossy surface and comes in a variety of thicknesses and colours. The edges of laser-cut acrylic have a laser-polished look which is seen as a professional standard.
Acrylic is however somewhat brittle in that you have to be careful not to crack the material if you want to drill holes after laser cutting. Because of this, many laser cutting companies also offer for the screw holes to be laser cut as well. Remember that acrylic parts will crack or chip at sharp corners if dropped on a hard surface. Acrylic usually comes with a paper masking on both sides.
